Last week's poll on the Your Place Northumberland sites asked people to vote for their favourite natural beauty spot in the county. We celebrate the winner, the Farne Islands, with a gallery of photos showing some of the islands' inhabitants:


What is Northumberland's top building?

You've picked Northumberland's top castle and its top beauty spot, but now we're asking you for your views on the county's best building.

buildingsmontage.jpgOur choice of 12 impressive structures ranges from the Royal Border Bridge in the north to Seaton Delaval Hall in the south, from the 12th century Hexham Abbey to modern buildings like Woodhorn and Alnwick Treehouse.

You can also pick from Morpeth Chantry, Howick Hall, Belsay Hall, Wallington, Brinkburn Priory, Cragside or Biddlestone Chapel - or add your own choice if we've missed it.

You can vote by clicking your choice on the Local Poll section at the bottom of this home page. The voting will be open for the next two weeks, with the winner announced on April 10.

Prudhoe Town earn a useful point

It is extremely tight at the bottom of the table in the Northern League Division Two.

Thornaby remain at the basement despite defeating Washington, who are just two places above them, with a brace of goals from Paul Vickers.

Prudhoe Town are sandwiched between the pair after they gained a useful point against Whitehaven. Joseph McAnespie gave the home side the lead and there were only nine minutes remaining as David Dustin equalised for the Cumbrians.

Jarrow Roofing's problems show no signs of abating and they crashed to an 8-2 defeat at Team Northumbria.

Tynedale see off league leaders

Tynedale stretched their home league winning streak to 37 matches on Saturday, seeing off National Two leaders Redruth thanks to three late tries.

Charlie Ingall's early score and Rob Miller's penalty had Tynedale 10-0 to the good, but the visitors grabbed a stranglehold to lead 13-14 at the break.

Tree marks new council

A tree planting ceremony will take place next week to celebrate the inauguration of the new Northumberland County Council.

Council leader Jeff Reid and chief executive Steve Stewart will be planting an oak tree in the grounds of County Hall, Morpeth, on Wednesday at 1pm.

They will also be officially raising the new county council flag.

Meanwhile, residents across the county can still give their opinions on how they would like the new-look authority to tackle problems in their community.

Plans to build a world class £27m centre of excellence for the care of children and young people in the region have been backed.

Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Trust has been given the support of Tynedale Council's planning committee for a new 40-bed specialist unit for children and young people with mental health or learning disabilities on the Prudhoe hospital site.

The scheme will generate 190 jobs on the underused and derelict hospital site, which once employed more than 2,000 staff, and will be the first of its kind in the country.

Farne Islands voted top beauty spot

The Farne Islands have been voted Northumberland's top beauty spot.

farne1.jpgIn the latest poll on the Your Place community websites, the Farnes got 27% of the votes, ahead of Lindisfarne (22%) and the Cheviots (17%).

Votes also went to Bolam Lakes, Crag Lough, Allen Banks, Druridge Bay and Kielder Water.

Tynedale face league leaders at Corbridge

Tynedale entertain league leaders Redruth in Corbridge, aware of their kingmaker status.

Rugby chairman John Shotton said his side will not surrender their 36-match home league winning run without a fight.

A group of musicians from Northumberland are celebrating being recognised as the best in the region.

Northumberland County Youth Jazz Orchestra won a string of accolades at the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival and Competition, which was held at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

One member of the band, 16-year-old Oliver Watson, picked up the prize for the best soloist with his rendition of a Louis Armstrong song.

Prudhoe man in trouble after fight at station

A rail passenger from Prudhoe involved in a violent confrontation at a station has been spared jail.

Richard Hope and a group of friends were on a train about to leave Newcastle's Central Station when they were approached by a man gesturing aggressively towards them.

Hope got off the train and hit the man in the face. Others then became involved, Newcastle Crown Court heard yesterday.
