Prudhoe man travels back to town he helped free from Nazis

The brave story of war hero Harry Fraser has been passed down through generations. And when he went back to the Dutch town he helped liberate 65 years ago he was treated like royalty.

Now he's back on home soil clutching a photo album and a video of his trip as well as an extra medal presented to him on behalf of the people of Helmond.

"I was treated like royalty when I went back," said Harry, 88, of Prudhoe. "They came to pick me up from the hotel in an armoured car and formed a procession through the streets to celebrate the day I helped liberate the town."

Wylam is the latest village to get a look into its past through The Journal's photographic archives.

The Tyne Valley village is well-known as the home of the railways, being the birthplace of George Stephenson and fellow rail pioneer Timothy Hackworth.

Our pictures show a scene from the village in 1956, with a young family picnicking in front of St Oswin's Church.

Prudhoe is a town where the old sits alongside the new.

The Norman Castle and the 19th-century Prudhoe Hall are well-known landmarks from the past, but the town is also known now for the large and modern industrial estate that sees hundreds of people employed on the banks of the Tyne.

The Journal's photographic archives reflect that history, with intriguing shots of the old ICI chemical works in the 1950s and pictures of the town's Front Street in 1973.
